Almost!

Who hasn't heard of Jennifer Chung?

She's an Asian teenager based in the US and quite popular in YouTube because of her videos where she sings with her beautiful voice (a lot of viewers actually commented that she should join American Idol).

Jennifer did an excellent rendition of Make Me Whole by Amiel Larreux (one of my favorites) but she's also got a couple of original songs. One of my favorites is her song "Almost" which you can check out here.

It's another weekend and the month is almost over.

Just had our defense on our research proposal last Tuesday and we're on the process of revising it per recommendation of our adviser.

Next week, we'll be having our last subject for the trimester. Yup, almost done. Soon we will all be singing "I Will Survive" for surviving the first trimester of the post-graduate course. And before we know it, a year has passed and hopefully we'll all graduate from the course.

Good thing that work was breezy lately. The paperworks trickle in manageable quantities. I hope it stays that way while i wait for my busted scanner to get fixed, but that's another story.

On another note...

Baking skills are starting to get on a steady pace. Most times I find myself researching for recipes and thinking of ways to make them more interesting.

My cookies have taken a backseat for a while because my brownies and cupcakes are getting rave reviews from the office people.

triple chocolate delight:

mmmm....

They said they wouldn't be surprised if one day i resigned from my job and just concentrate on the baking business or put up a bakeshop.

Although i like the idea, i just don't think i'd be doing it very soon. It would take a lot of work and capital to start with.

For now, i'm happy with what i'm doing. I have a day job which serves as my steady source of income. The baking stuff serves as my stress buster and an outlet for my creativity (or kaartehan, hehehe!). Sometimes, those baked goodies also provide me extra dough! No pun intended.

= = =

Oh well.
Have a nice weekend!
And see you again next month!

I watched you try to cross the bridge,
looking for a steady foothold to walk on.
But you gave up so soon,
knowing you can't really cross a bridge you once burned.

Bills, bills, bills

The phone bill came today and i was surprised that the envelope was red (meaning: notice for disconnection). Now this rarely happens because i pay the bill every month -if not on time, i just never let them pile up. But it's there already so i decided to pay both the previous month's bill and this month's even if the latter is still due next month because i don't want to risk disconnection.

Now i end up having just enough cash on hand to get me by until the next payday. Oh well! At least i don't have to worry about the bill next month!

Flowers

Happen to pass by Dangwa on my way home. The jeepney driver was taking detours and shortcuts to avoid heavy traffic jam. So there i was, sitting inside the vehicle looking out the window, taking in all the sights and sounds of the busy street brimming with flowers and people haggling with the vendors.

Looking at the flowers, i began to get lost in my thoughts. I remember ninang's flowers, which i took home and adorned our little grotto for a couple of days. I remember the last time i had flowers on my desk at the office. I remember that one time i took home some mums bought form Tagaytay, which died after a week (maybe because i didn't have a green thumb?). I remember the orchids that papa was able to grow and the pretty white flowers that bloomed under his care.

And before my thoughts went any farther...i let out a sigh to get me back to my reality.

I just thought, if i wanted flowers, i'll buy them myself.

For anyone who didn't see David Letterman's Show when he
talked about this incident on his show:
(And it's a true story...)

On a recent weekend in Atlantic City , a woman won a bucketful of quarters at a slot machine. She took a break from the slots for dinner with her husband in the hotel dining room. But first she wanted to stash the quarters in her room. 'I'll be right back and we'll go to eat,' she told her husband and carried the coin-laden bucket to the elevator.

As she was about to walk into the elevator she noticed two men already aboard. Both were black. One of them was tall...very tall...an intim idating figure. The woman froze. Her first thought was: 'These two are going to rob me.' Her next thought was: 'Don't be a bigot; they look like perfectly nice gentlemen.' But racial stereotypes are powerful, and fear immobilized her.

She stood and stared at the two men. She felt anxious, flustered and ashamed. She hoped they didn't read her mind but gosh, they had to know what she was thinking!!!
Her hesitation about joining them in the elevator was all too obvious now. Her face was flushed. She couldn't just stand there, so with a mighty effort of will she picked up one foot and stepped forward and followed with the other foot and was on the elevator.

Avoiding eye contact, she turned around stiffly and faced the elevator doors as they closed. A second passed, and then another second, and then another. Her fear increased!

The elevator didn't move. Panic consumed her. 'My God,' she thought, I'm trapped and a bout to be robbed!' Her heart plummeted. Perspiration poured from every pore.
Then one of the men said, 'Hit the floor.'

Instinct told her to do what they told her. The bucket of quarters flew upwards as she threw out her arms and collapsed on the elevator floor. A shower of coins rained down on her.

Take my money and spare me, she prayed.
More seconds passed. She heard one of the men say politely,
'Ma'am, if you'll just tell us what floor you're going to, we'll push
the button.'

The one who said it had a little trouble getting the words out. He was trying mightily to hold in a belly laugh. The woman lifted her head and looked up at the two men. They reached down to help her up. Confused, she struggled to her feet.

When I told my friend here to hit the floor,' said the average
sized one, 'I meant that he should hit the elevator button for our
floor. I didn't mean for you to hit the floor , ma'a m.' He spoke
genially. He bit his lip. It was obvious he was having a hard time not laughing.

The woman thought: 'My God, what a spectacle I've made of myself.'She was too humiliated to speak. She wanted to blurt out an apology, but word failed her How do you apologize to two perfectly respectable gentlemen for behaving as though they were going to rob you? She didn't know what to say.

The three of them gathered up the strewn quarters and refilled her bucket. When the elevator arrived at her floor they then insisted on walking her to her room. She seemed a little unsteady on her feet, and they were afraid she might not make it down the corridor. At her door they bid her a good evening.

As she slipped into her room she could hear them roaring with
laughter as they walked back to the elevator. The woman brushed
herself off. She pulled herself together and went downstairs for
dinner with her husband.

The next morning flowers were delivered to her room - a dozen yellow roses. Attached to EACH rose was a crisp one hundred dollar bill.
The card said:

'Thanks for the best laugh we've had in years.'
It was signed:

Major Slacking

It's a holiday today and i had a rather long weekend. But unlike the other weekend, i was on major slacking this time.

Well, not completely.

Saturday was a busy day at home cooking and mingling with the relatives as we remember dear old lolo who passed away a year ago.

Sunday was spent sleeping til almost noon, binging on yesterday's left-over food and watching movies on HBO.

Today, it's almost the same as yesterday. Almost.
I still have homework to do and a take-home exam to accomplish.

Signing off for now...

The other cake

As previously mentioned, i made another cake and brought it to the office today. I was so excited that i forgot to take a pic of it.

The cake kinda looks like this:

chocolate cake with pink icing and colored candy sprinkles.
they loved it!

The cake was small so i thought of adding some chocolate cupcakes so that everyone can have their share of the goodies.

It was like a feast of cakes because we also had a store-bought roll cake courtesy of another colleague who earlier "pledged" the cake.

Of course, it wouldn't feel like a birthday celebration without some pancit so some friends chipped in to order a big platter of Pancit Malabon while some thought of buying soda for our drinks.

It was a lot of fun sharing the food and sharing laughter.
The simple pleasures of life...

from Ninang

It's been quite a while since the last time someone gave me flowers. So i was surprised yesterday afternoon when a colleague handed me a bouquet of peach roses. Some officemates got curious as well.
I got the card and it read: Happy Birthday, from Ninang. But Ninang (tagalog word for godmother) wasn't around so i just texted her for the lovely flowers. She replied: nice to know you appreciate the flowers.

Hay ninang! You have no idea how much i loooove flowers.

(How long has it been since the last delivery? Find out here.)

Block off

No work. No classes. No pesky phonecalls. No clients to accommodate. I am on official leave today. Bwahahahaha! After all, i still am entitled for a birthday leave, you know!

Nope, i didn't have a party. I figured it was a nice day to do the laundry. It was a sunny day with some wind. Very good combination!

By afternoon, i was store-hunting in Quiapo with my cousin and we were lucky enough to find what we were looking for. Looked like i hit a goldmine. I was looking for curing salt for my hamonado, but the store also had baking ingredients (choco bars, powdered chocolate, colored sugar, candy sprinkles, etc) and materials for packaging... oh it was wonderful!

I ended up buying not just the curing salt. I also got candy sprinkles and the cellosheet -plastic wrappers- for future use (to wrap my brownies with).

Yeah, talk about being lucky.

Balisong

Today, i'm officially 29.

Like my previous birthdays, it was rainy. When i was younger, my birthday always falls on examination week at school. Now my birthday still happens to be on a school day. And to make it worse, i couldn't have my "birthday leave" because i'm supposed to present my report in my Research subject.

Talk about being lucky.

Sometimes i wish i was born during the summer so i could celebrate my birthday at the beach.

Oh well...
Happy birthday to me!

My Cake

chocolate cake with coffee cream frosting

Photo taken using my "busted" camera phone. Yeah, i can still use it. Just had to aim, shoot, and hope that i got the frame i wanted when i upload it to the computer. Gotta have the phone fixed as soon as possible. Uh, subject to availability of funds. Hehehe!

Back to my cake, shall we? The recipe called for sliced fresh kiwis and strawberries or other fruits in season. I opted to use canned fruits instead (consisting of pears, peaches, pineapples, cherries). I use whatever is readily available.

The cake will be left for my family's consumption tomorrow. I'm planning to bake another cake to bring to the office on Friday.

5th

Happy Anniversary, St. Lazarus Choir!

5 years and counting! I'm on my 4th year with the bunch!

Unlike our previous anniversary celebrations where we just gather and have dinner at some fancy place, we decided to do something different this year. We figured we want to make other people happy and share some of our blessings. So we arranged for a Jollibee Party and off we went to the Pediatric ward of San Lazaro Hospital.

It was heartbreaking seeing kids who were really sick (mostly of pneumonia), babies stuck with tubes connected to oxygen tanks and parents watching over their children. But somehow, seeing those kids smile and laugh at the Jollibee's (the mascot) antics, i felt that we were doing something good by spreading some cheer to the children even for just a few minutes.

*sigh*

I wish all those kiddies get well the soonest.

After the party, we sang in the mass at 5:30pm. Was it just me, or did we just sing with a little more heart this afternoon?

Whatever it was, it was all good. It was for God's greater glory.

Oh my!

Cold didn't push through (woohoo!).

But i still feel bad.

My camera-phone of 15 months is acting up crazy. I think the screen's backlight is busted coz it won't light up when i use the phone. I can't see the messages i'm trying to read and i can't see stuff i'm trying to take a picture of. What a bummer!

And my birthday's in a few days....

*sigh*

Wrong timing

(Cold Case v.2)

The past few days of taking care of my dad and sister and worrying about other stuff got the better of me. I feel like i'm catching a cold due to sleep deprivation and the very fickle weather that we're having for a couple of weeks already.

Last Tuesday's class was one more to worry about. We're expected to come up with a research project in three weeks' time.

Now's not the time to get sick.

it's Kenny!

galing no?

Blondies

Technically, they're just brownies without the chocolate. Hence, the light color. But i can't resist putting a little of that bitter-sweet stuff so i took out my dark chocolate bar and shaved it to my heart's content, putting chocolate flakes on top of those blondies.

Another one down!

So after 4 weeks of nosebleed-inducing lectures and quizes, the subject has come to a conclusion last Tuesday...and tomorrow starts a tougher subject.

and that's Prof. V with his plaque of appreciation from the class.
He said it was his first-ever plaque that was academic in nature.

More bread!

Yeah, i was still able to squeeze in some baking yesterday. So dad and my siblings will have something to munch on (besides ulam at kanin) while i'm out at work.

And as for me, i had a little fun doing it too!

Long Weekend

and quite an exhausting one at that! But it's all good. At least i could say that my weekend had been quite productive.

Dad was sick since Friday so i had to take charge of feeding the family for the weekend. As if that's not enough, sister got sick yesterday and had a bout with an on-again-off-again fever, so i had to do her part of the household chore and take care of her and papa. Whew! Ganyan talaga pag panganay ka. Then i had to take care of everything else in between--even fetch pail after pail of water because flowing water from household faucets has become a thing of the past here in our area, unless you have an electric waterpump which we don't have because installing such would lead to sky-rocketing electricity bills.

No, this is not a rant post even if it seems to be. I'm trying to see what's good in all of this. For the most part, it was a time for physical activity. Yeah, i was tired by the end of the day but it's all good. Better than slacking my ass off!

So how was your weekend?

Cheesy...

Following the success of my first white bread, i tried tweaking it up to come up with my version of cheese bread.

I made a mistake of putting grated cheese just before baking the dough. Hence, the black swirls on the bread. Tried to cover it up with a fresh batch of grated cheese when the bread was done and i thought it kinda looked pretty interesting. The burnt cheese also gave an interesting twist on how the bread tasted--kinda like munching on chiz curls.

surprise!
it has cheese inside!

Mom's Verdict

Mama buzzed me yesterday on YM:

Your banana bread was hard when it got here and the cookies got soft. Tried to re-heat them, though. They tasted pretty good. Yummy-yummy. No wonder you have fans there. I'm so happy for you

Hehehe! Thanks 'ma!

Nanay nga kita! ;)

Brownies!

(pics backlog)

I stumbled upon this recipe with the title "perfect brownies." Curiosity got the better of me so i gave it a shot. I think its other name should be "easy brownies" because it's so easy to prepare. ;)

I used to shy away from brownie recipes because based on my bro's brownie experience, he had quite a challenging time before finally arriving at his best version of brownies. But when i found the "perfect brownie" recipe, i felt that it was finally time to face it and bake it.

So i did!
;)
